Venture-backed MedTech: Comprehensive Talent Acquisition and Management Strategy

Bivacor is a venture-backed MedTech company that has designed a cutting-edge, long-term device that can replace the total function of the patient’s native heart. The small, compact device uses proven rotary blood-pump technology to provide the required cardiac output.

Challenge: Upon receipt of a new funding round, Bivacor was given the edict to double its headcount within the calendar year.  The challenge is that the company did not have an HR or Talent function in place. The existing strategy to engage a multitude of contingency firms had yielded zero placements.

Solution: After meeting with the executive team and investors at the company’s Huntington Beach HQ, AccelPeople devised a comprehensive and customized talent acquisition and management strategy.  The three C-Suite roles were handled by AccelPeople’s counterparts at Westwood & Wilshire.  An RPO-model was engaged to provide a dedicated resource for a couple of mid-management level roles.  And AccelPeople identified and helped Bivacor bring onboard a local contract recruiter with deep MedTech experience to handle the bulk of the positions.  Lastly, AccelPeople installed an interim Head of HR to manage everything.

Outcome: Within 3 months, all but 1 of the positions were filled.  As such, all work interim/fractional activity has been scaled back and will be redeployed as the requisition load grows.
